The Sweet Smell Success and Grilled Meat

DieselFish finished the season with a bang (and a shot of soju).

Tonight, we gathered at Beque to celebrate a successful season filled with killer workouts, new friends and enough restaurant check-ins to keep Yelp busy for a while.

Marynka Rojas, the team’s coach, put down her grill tongs, and stood up to make a speech.

“This was one of our best seasons in a long time!” she said. “We won medals, recruited new members and had a great time!”

“Now,” she continued, “LET’S TOAST! GO DIESEL!”

It’s not too late to join the fun, fitness and food. We will continue to paddle in the fall and winter. Email me now at dfcaptains@gmail.com for free dragon boat lessons in Redwood City!

Now is the Best Time to Dragon Boat

Downtime is fun time when you learn something new

No big races coming up?

No problem!

We used the downtime to try new things.

Angeline and Bryan tried steering.

D-Jae and Wolverine tried setting the pace.

Today was an opportunity to grow and learn.

We ended the day with hearty German food. The team learned that sausages and good company help you recover after working out.

Dragon Boat Success Stories: D-Jae's First Race

D-Jae was nervous about racing... Then he tried it and loved it!

You never forget your first race with DieselFish! D-Jae just rocked his first race at the Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival. Here's what he had to say about it!

"I was so nervous, but once we got into our starting position, all my fears just went away... I got into that zone, and I just kept going."

Save Your Teammates! | DieselFish Dragon Boat Team

This weekend’s weather is killer. Here’s what to do if your crew overheats.

Paddlers, be careful at practice this weekend!

Record-breaking temperatures are expected across Northern California.

In response, the National Weather Service issued this graphic that shows you the difference between heat exhaustion and heat stroke.

Please watch your teammates for signs of overheating. Let's take care of each other out there.

Signs of Mutiny? | DieselFish Dragon Boat Team

No! Signs of POWER!

The coach went away for a business trip and left me in charge. So, this happened…

I think I got cocky because the team paddled so well today. They nailed their starts! Also, their power drills sent the boat flying through the water. I nearly fell out.

Our newcomers are improving, too. They are paddling longer without resting. It just takes some practice.

(If I don’t post a blog piece next week, call the cops and tell them the coach did it.)

So Fresh and So Clean and So Full and So Fast | DieselFish Dragon Boat Team

We had a so-so day…

We switched things up and ate lunch before practice. The crew went to I Dumpling to feast on lamb dumplings with cumin (so fragrant), paper-thin slices of tendon stepped in chili oil (so spicy) and Shanghai soup dumplings (so comforting).

We then worked off the calories by cleaning our boats. We’d rather be racing, but this task was overdue. The crew sanded and scrubbed the fleet’s hulls until they looked so fresh and so clean. Grunt work like this goes by faster when you have company.

We then tossed aside our sponges and sand paper and grabbed paddles. The coach said our starts have improved. The crew has mastered the new start sequence and found a rate that is sustainable and competitive. We are so ready for the big race!

Our day together was so productive and fun!

7/22/17 Dragon Boat Practice Log: Gimme Power NOW!

DieselFish worked together a conquered a challenge

When: Saturday, 7/22/17, 10-noon
Where: Bair Island Aquatic Center, Redwood City, San Francisco Bay Area

WOW. We’re going to feel it tomorrow. My core and leg muscles are already burning. But why am I happy about it?

Today, Coach Marynka began preparing us for the Northern California International Dragon Boat Festival. She was happy with our victory at the CDBA Sprint Race, but she noticed we kept running out of gas near the finish line. Her solution?

Endurance pieces to build our stamina. The coach had us paddle for five minutes straight, applying maximum power at different intervals.

Every stroke felt heavy. Each gasp of air wasn’t enough….

But we managed to pull through! No one in the crew dropped out to rest—not even our newbies. I’m pleased they held their own with our veteran paddlers. (Our training program is working!)

Moments like this make me proud to be a DieselFish. We worked hard together and overcame a difficult challenge. That is what dragon boat is all about.

Dragon Boat Success Stories: Senta’s First Race

Senta joined DieselFish to make new friends. He found that and so much more!

You never forget your first dragon boat race with DieselFish! Senta just rocked his first race at Lake Merced in San Francisco. Here’s what he had to say about it!

Q: You just finished your first race with Dieselish today. How do you feel? How as the race?
A: We did four races. I wasn’t expecting them to be so tiresome but fulfilling. So what you get out of it is there’s a team. It’s not one person doing something. It’s a bunch of 20 people doing something together in unison and actually winning. It feels good. So that type of a feeling…It’s something beautiful.

Q: Why did you join DieselFish?
A: I moved here recently and I was trying to make friends, and these are the best friends you can make…Once you join the team you are welcome. It’s always friendly and it’s always fun. So you enjoy exercise, the fun the activities, and building friendships. So I love it.

Congratulations, Senta!

Dragon Boat Success Stories: Brian the Wolverine’s First Race

Brian and his girlfriend recently joined the team together

You never forget your first dragon boat race with DieselFish! Brian just rocked his first race at Lake Merced in San Francisco. Here’s what he had to say about it!

Q: You just completed your first race with DieselFish. How do you feel? How was the race?
A: I feel really good. The race felt really nice. We worked really well together.

Q: Why did you join the team?
A: I joined the team because I wanted to get my girlfriend into this activity as well. She’s been a paddler for a while, and she brought me into the boat. It just felt really nice to be welcomed by everyone in the team.

Congratulations, Brian!
