Looking for a killer core workout? Try a dragon boat racing
with DieselFish!
Look how hard the team is working! They’re facing the triple
threat that dragon boat racers must overcome: water resistance, wind and current.
Right now, the team members’ cores are aching. But they’re winning!
Because they’re getting a hardcore workout. The sport of
dragon boat racing is notoriously tough on the core muscles.
You see, before every stroke, the team members rotate their cores
to face the center of the boat.
Then, they bury their paddles into the water. Digging deep. As
if they’re stabbing the ocean floor.
Next, they unleash a massive counterrotation. Their core
muscles are struggling against the water pressure. A strong headwind makes this
movement even harder. The current is adding additional resistance. It feels like
the team is pulling the boat through cement.
But the team fights! Against the forces of Mother Nature
herself. Against fatigue. Against sore muscles.
Because with every stroke they’re getting stronger. And with
strength, comes speed.
After I turned off the camera, the team finished this endurance
drill. The boat became quiet and still. All you could hear was the sound of
labored breathing.
Then after a rest, the team members took deep breaths and started
paddling again. DIESELFISH IS GOING TO CRUSH THIS WORKOUT.

We turned and
rotated the other cheek to get more power
We had a focused practice today because we had no choice.
Rain clouds loomed over the horizon and the tide was beating a quick retreat.
“Let’s get in the boat NOW,” said Coach Marynka.
As we paddled out, the air was fresh and clean. The water
was warmer than we expected—no frozen pinky fingers today!
We brought the boat to a stop, and Marynka began her
lesson about body positioning.
“Focus your weight on your outside cheek,” she said. “Try
it.”
“You mean my face?” somebody innocently asked.
“Not that cheek,”
somebody else responded. “Marynka means the cheeks below your waist.”
For the next 40 minutes, the crew of DieselFish DragonBoat Team twisted and swung around its hips and bottoms.
These contortions led to breakthroughs in speed and power. Soon, the boat was chugging along at brisk pace. “Wow,” joked Captain
Alex. “Our butts are going to get so strong.”
“You’ve been working hard and the tide is going out. Let’s
go home,” said Coach Marynka.
The boat docked. We disembarked and headed for
the boathouse. Most of us were walking funny. Let’s call it strutting after a
productive practice.
After practice,
we went to our old hangout, L&L Hawaiian Barbeque. I ordered my usual: the BBQ beef plate (hold the
veggies) and a spam musubi. But what I really wanted was an espresso
and throat lozenges.
During lunch,
we got to know Ray and Bonnie, the newbies that joined us for practice. They
had just completed their first dragon boat experience. They looked like they
were in high spirits. (I’m not sure if their good moods were the result of their endorphin rushes after paddling or the BBQ.) We look forward to seeing them again! What We Learned
Wow, what a day out on the water! Coach Sean asked us to focus on power. We paddled some endurance pieces—but with a twist. The new technique seemed to work and help us synchronize our strokes. We achieved greater power for longer durations.

Last night, I had a brief conversation with Dan about the team’s session with the rowing machines. We agreed that mental toughness – pushing yourself to pull harder when your arms and back are giving out – is a critical part of this workout.
This morning, it occurred to me this ability is related to mindfulness – the act of living and thriving in the present. The challenge is finding a way to acknowledge the weariness and channel it into powerful and efficient pulls.
