DF: You just completed your first dragon boat race with DieselFish. How do you feel?
L: It was great learning what a race day is like. I did a total of four races throughout the day but wasn’t tired afterwards. I also did a lot of snacking and soaked up the festival spirit.

DF: What advice would you give to other new paddlers who are about to race for the first time?
L: The day was a lot more chill than expected but getting a medal is a lot harder than expected. The team provided great equipment, so don’t stress if you don’t have a paddle and seat pad.

DF: Why do you like dragon boat racing?
L: I like the festival spirit. It’s basically a day of snacking and chatting, and you get to mingle with other teams.

DF: Why do you like DieselFish?
L: I like that DieselFish is inclusive despite the team members having very different skill levels. Everybody got to race, and we never single out members that are out of practice.

DieselFish's First Dragon Boat Race of 2014

Your Minister of Newbie Happiness is proud of you

Good job at the CDBA Regional Regatta, DieselFish! This year's race at Lake Merced in San Francisco was filled with adventures and surprises. Here are my highlights:

><((((º> Racing on the left side of the boat for the first time:

I’ve always struggled with paddling on the left. But this season, the coaches pushed me to become ambidextrous.

><((((º> Seeing Charles, Elise and Lin again:
Nothing good gets away. Charles drove all the way from LA just to race with us! Lin and Elise have become the team’s moms.

><((((º> Getting to know our new recruits:
Congrats to Eva, Ferzeen, Jason, Lucy and Rachel for completing their first race!

><((((º> Improving in every race:
It’s encouraging to see constant improvement! Let's see where this momentum takes us.

The sprint races are next! GO DIESEL!
